Brian Goodwin

Brian Goodwin is a native of Racine, Wisconsin, and started playing horn at age ten. He earned performance degrees at the Manhattan School of Music and DePaul University with teachers Michelle Baker, Otto Carrillo, and Jon Boen. Following his studies, Brian accepted a three year contract as co-principal horn with the Hyogo Performing Arts Center Orchestra in Hyogo, Japan. He has played with orchestras throughout Asia and Australia, and toured extensively in Japan, China, and Europe. Brian moved back to Chicago in 2014, and in addition to an active freelance career in the Chicago area, he holds positions with the Illinois Philharmonic and South Bend Symphony Orchestras.

What is your favorite musical memory? I absolutely love opera, so I’m always happy when I have a chance to play, and I can’t remember how many operas I’ve attended as an audience member. There’s something really special about experiencing opera in person—the lights in the theater go down and music begins in the darkness before a story unfolds in front of you. There’s really nothing quite like it.

What do you enjoy doing outside of music? I enjoy playing with Linux and Unix computers, dabbling in hobby electronics, and working on cars.
